EVERY day, women are paying up to £60 to be wrapped in seaweed, ivy extracts, mineral salts, bandages and clingfilm, in the hope that they will melt away those unwanted inches. There are few things more exciting than being told you can lose weight and get rid of your cellulite while lying down and doing absolutely nothing.
Well, there’s George Clooney saying he wants you to have his children, I suppose. But let’s face it, the latter is an unlikely scenario. However, the first offer is something which is now being advertised in beauty salons up and down the country.
Come in here, the therapists call with their siren voices, and we will wrap you in bandages to remove your unsightly bumps and send you back into the world a size smaller and with skin like butter.
But do inch- shifting, cellulitebusting body wraps work? At £30 to £60 a go, they’re one of the more expensive salon treatments, particularly when a course of around six is usually recommended.
I sent my team of willing guinea pigs to find out – with mixed results,
as you will see. Before you even set foot in the salon, however, it’s important to know that not all body wraps are the same. There are three basic types that offer different results.
Sally Penford, education manager at the International Dermal Institute in Leatherhead, Surrey, explains: ‘First, there are detoxifying wraps, which are designed to help cleanse the body of toxins and boost the immune system.
‘Over a period of time, these may help to improve cellulite, which can be caused by a build-up of toxins.
‘Second, there are hydrating wraps, used to moisturise the skin and improve tone. Finally, there are inch-loss wraps, which are inch-loss wraps, which tend to use traditional detoxifying ingredients and pressure from the way the body is wrapped to reduce fluid retention in the skin.’
Penford is keen to stress that any inch-loss derived from one of these treatments can be only temporary.
So if you’ve got a slinky dress to slip into this weekend, an inch-loss wrap on the same day could help you to look and feel slimmer. But don’t expect it to replace the long-term effects of diet and exercise.
‘If you’re feeling stressed or have been burning the candle at both ends, a detox wrap will take away that feeling of heaviness and lethargy that we all suffer from sometimes,’ says Penford. ‘You may not physically lose inches, but you’ll feel lighter and less bloated for anything up to a week.’
If it’s firmer, smoother skin you’re after, a hydrating or anti-ageing wrap could be your best bet. ‘A hydrating wrap, particularly if it’s applied after exfoliation, can give the skin an unrivalled glow,’ says Penford.
